Jacki Smith’s ‘Why Is That’ Spread

Tarot is a remarkable tool. Out of the many systems of the arcane sciences, tarot is the most versatile. Within its 78-card system is the ability to answer any question, and provide insight into areas of concern in our lives. We can access information on many levels – the teleological, psychological, and mundane. In essence, tarot can reach the deepest corners of our mind to reveal startling information that may be hidden from us, and reveals powerful information that makes our lives well-rounded and meaningful.

During one of our Psychic Friends Live shows my co-host Jacki Smith revealed a four layered formula to identify what magical candles were best to use for any given issue. The formula requires the Querent to search deep inside their unconscious to discover the root level of the problem. Why? Often what appears to be the issue is really just the symptom of a larger and deeper problem that needs to be resolved before the manifested symptom can be addressed.

Working with clients this can be cumbersome. Many clients are afraid of accessing what is limiting them or do not know how to express their uncertainties and anxieties into words. In addition, we may feel awkward expressing our fears and the root of our problems because we are embarrassed or feel self-conscious of what they may reveal.

I have translated Jacki’s formula into a tarot spread. The spreads purpose is to reveal the deeper layer of our unconscious and provide insight into what can be worked through in order to change our current situation at the root level. Once we resolve the root issue, it becomes easier for the surface problem or symptom to be resolved.

How It Works: (click on graphic to make it bigger and printable)

Card 1: The Significator: Go through the tarot deck to decide which card is most reflective of your current situation. This would be the symptom – the manifestation of a root problem that needs to be resolved.

Cards 2-5: The layered roots: Shuffle your tarot deck asking the question, “why is that?” Once you are ready select your first card. This card will reveal the first layer beneath the manifested problem. Keep reshuffling as you prepare to draw your next card. The answer you receive from your 2nd card, is layered into your 3rd card, and layered again into your 4th and 5th cards by simply asking the question, “Why is that?”

Card 6: The path out: The 6th card is probably the most important. It reveals what you can do to get out of your situation or start to work with the symptom in a manner that begins to a process of action on your part to begin resolving the root problem or core issue.

‘Why is That’ Julie?

A friend of mine contacted me after listening to an episode of Psychic Friends Live where I discussed the ‘why is that?’ method of problem resolution on the air. We will call her Julie.

Julie works in politics and is 45 years old. She has a high powered consultant job that takes up the majority of her time. In fact, her free time is limited and often nonexistent. She contacted me because she wants to explore expanding her social circle outside her professional life. She was having difficulty achieving the social life she desired, and had problem getting to the roots of her issue. After working with her for about an hour with Jacki’s method, I decided to use the tarot cards to help us get to the root of the matter. I used the Mythic Tarot with Julie.

Card 1: The Three of Cups
I chose the Three of Cups as the significator for Julie. She had a desire to be more social, outgoing, and to bring people into her life that were not necessarily connected with her professional life as a political analyst. Since the number three is an initiation number, it seemed rather fitting and reflected her need to explore her social circle which could lead towards more emotional fulfillment in her life that she has yet to attain. Up to this point she has never been married, had a serious long term relationship, or had children.

Card 2: The High Priestess

In the Mythic Tarot, the High Priestess features the Goddess Persephone and her descent into the underworld. I found this card to be rather interesting since the High Priestess in the Tarot is our first encounter with the mysterious world of the unconscious. When I showed the image of the Mythic High Priestess to Julie, she felt that it represented death. She noted Persephone’s death like pallor and the pomegranate she carried.

In symbolism, the pomegranate reflects abundance and fertility so I found her association with the pomegranate and death curiously interesting. Perhaps what is beginning to die within Julie are her attitudes towards the role of women in our culture, and that the pomegranate reflects the birth of something new. I felt that the High Priestess represented a fear of what she could possibly find out about herself if she became more social. Would the image that she has so carefully crafted over the years of a powerful, independent, intelligent woman be confronted by something larger than herself? Julie confirmed my feelings about her and revealed to me that she has always felt uncomfortable around women who simply got married and had children rather than pursuing any form of individual life outside their relationships. She feared that beginning to develop social relationships and to begin dating someone seriously would create a social pressure for her to become someone that she feels that she is not.

Why is that?

Card 3: The Four of Swords

The traditional divinatory meaning for the Four of Swords is a period of rest or convalescence before we proceed forward. This is a card of deep reflection, and certain things need to be thought through before forward movement can happen. When I showed the card to Julie, it was interesting to me that she really did not care for it. She felt that the four swords were obstacles or too many complications that prevented her from moving forward. The card definitely made her feel very tense, and rather than her seeing the meditative qualities of the mythic figure of Orestes (while he weighs his choices and options after the murder of his father) she informed me that he felt tense and anxious. As she related this to her own life, she revealed to me that she prefers to live in the world of the known; where everything is reliable and dependable even when life and her professional world are chaotic.

Why is that?

Card 4: Judgement

Ironically, the Judgement card in the Mythic Tarot has the exact same background as the High Priestess. The card of Judgement is one of karma. Not in the way that we understand karma, but the underlying pattern in life where one moment leads to another, which then leads to another more like aninterwoven tapestry rather than a repayment for the debts that have been acquired because of wrong deeds. The image on the card of Judgement is Hermes, the messenger God. However, in the Judgement card he is the psychopomp that is one of the few God’s that could move freely between consciousness and unconsciousness. Often when the Judgement card appears it is a process of preparation for the birth of something new, which is beginning to percolate in the depths of our unconscious. After all, it is when we understand the interconnectedness of our actions and their results that we often prepare for the process of a new journey.

I placed both the images of the High Priestess and Judgement in front of Julie. I asked her what the similarities of the cards are, and of course she reiterated the theme of death that she experienced when we worked with the High Priestess card. I then asked her about the differences, and one of the things that she noted was the mummies that were rising out of the sarcophagi. I asked her to expand upon what these mummies represented to her, and she revealed that they were the choices and decisions that she left behind in pursuit of her career. They were buried in the ‘tomb’ of her own unconscious. Next, I asked Julie what the similarities of the cards were and she noted that different color pillars, which she felt represented a need to bring some balance into her life.

Why is that?

Card 5: The Knight of Cups

On a predictive level, I found this card being the last card of the ‘why is that’ spread rather interesting because it could reflect what is coming from her unconscious is the need for relationships (whether love or friendship) in her life. In many ways, I felt that card being in this position reflected hope for her to break out of this self-imposed isolation that she has experienced.

In the Mythic Tarot, the Knight of Cups is represented by the hero Perseus, who was one of the sons of Zeus. Perseus’ story is very interesting because he takes his own trip into the underworld to slay the Gorgon Medusa (our inner monsters) in order to save the princess Andromeda from being eaten by a sea monster. Perseus must use tools in order to slay Medusa because any mortal man that looked directly into her eyes was turned to stone. Of course, since Perseus is the son of Zeus he was provided with the tools to complete his task by the Gods. Perseus used a shield that was given to him by the Goddess Athena to view the Medusa through the shields reflection, which allowed him to slay the Medusa without looking at her directly. In essence, in order to slay the Gorgon he must use the powers of “reflection”. In other words, he must look deep inside himself.

I told the story of Perseus to Julie, and asked her what she felt about that. She broke down into tears and told me that she felt that she was both Andromeda and the Medusa waiting for Perseus to rescue her. As she approached her mid 40’s she felt that she had sacrificed much of her life in order to pursue the career of the independent woman and to attain some notoriety in her profession. As she reflected, she felt that this career had not really given her what she wanted out of life and that part of her felt rather empty inside. At this point she was using her career more as a means of escaping her life rather than wholly living it.

When I told her that I felt hopeful for her since all the Knights in tarot reflect some form of movement, she seemed rather relieved. It appeared to me that she was actually moving beyond the Judgement card through the course of the reading, and entering into the World card and the beginning of a new journey.

Card 6: The Path Out – The Hierophant

The final card that I pulled for Julie was one that would help her on her path. In the Mythic Tarot, the Hierophant is represented by Chiron the wounded healer. In manyways, the image of Chiron, who is part human and part horse, reflects human beings on many levels. In essence, we are part animal and part Gods, and it is the task of being trapped within a human body, and experiencing our human condition that can be deeply wounding to us. The potentials we receive at birth can be quite limited by the process of living ordinary life. In many cases, the expectations of what the vision we expect our lives to become can be rather crippling to us once we reach midlife. We become the wounded healer because we now have a body of experience that life has given us, but the wound of realizing that we can never go back and change the past. We are all bound to the ‘Judgement’ of our past choices. I felt that Julie understanding these choices and their consequences would give her the understanding (The Hierophant) needed in order to begin her new social journey.

At the beginning of the reading, Julie revealed that she was uncomfortable around women that simply got married and had children rather than pursuing any form of individual life outside their family. However, the path of the Hierophant may be for her to embrace the “life” she has long repudiated and attempt to understand that “relationships” and “motherhood” are not less than the life of the “working woman”– it is only different. By embracing the “relationship” needs in her life (possibly in a traditional way) she can begin to make peace with herself and become a more rounded individual.

Is It Over Yet?

Is it over yet?”   I have answered this question multiple times over the past month, and each time I can hear the horror in people’s voices when I answer, “not anytime soon!”   It’s been a rough road since the beginning of June when the current eclipse cycle began.  Week after week we are being bombarded with very intensive astrological energies with no end in sight.

By the way, you have seen nothing; this week is going to be INTENSE! Buckle your seat belts — hazardous conditions ahead.

The Astrology:

Your major weather player this week is the Sun.  The Sun currently is in emotionally fluid Cancer.   Under normal circumstances, the Sun provides us with the ability to shine, be ourselves, and be individual.   He gives us the ability to know ourselves and remain loyal to the truth that lives within our hearts.   When the Sun has positive outlets from other planets, those planets provide us with a path to express our specialness.  However, when the Sun is afflicted (fancy word for difficult to express itself), our ability to shine can feel stymied, and we may feel pressured to conform to others or the collective consensus.  In fact, the urge to be unique and special can be threatening to others, who in turn may criticize or envy another’s sense of individuality.

As with the last few Cosmic Weather Forecasts, this forecast will continue to be challenging.  The Sun will be highly afflicted as it squares Uranus in Aries, opposes Pluto in Capricorn, and then squares Saturn in Libra.  In the midst of this intensive solar energy will be a Solar Eclipse on July 1 (I will focus exclusively on the Eclipse in a future blog) forming a cardinal grand cross.  If you are dizzy after reading all that, join the club!  I am dizzy thinking about it.

Your Cosmic Weather Forecast

Each week, I attempt to look at the current astrological signature and ask, “What is the lesson in this?”  What are the planets trying to tell us, and more importantly how do we understand this energy to make sense of it in a productive manner?  After all, what would be the use of knowing the energies of the planets if we could not use them to our advantage!

What can we learn from a grand cross?  A grand cross is an accumulation of astrological energies that have manifested over a period of time that have a profound influence on the collective.  Since they do not occur with regular frequency, they tend to bring about life altering energies.   Our natural tendency is to attempt to defend ourselves against their (the planets) onslaught, yet this only works for so long till we are forced to make particular changes and decisions that we have little choice in.  In many ways, if we are heavily influenced by these energies (major configurations such as Sun, Moon, or Ascendant in cardinal signs such as Aries, Cancer, Libra, or Capricorn) it is going to feel like we are being pulled in many directions until we hit “rock bottom” because there is no easy route out or any quick fix to our problems.  In fact, the intensity of our problems will persist until we make an active decision to change what we are doing, which might ultimately include a different path.

This week you will notice areas of your life that need changing.  What areas do you feel frustrated (Sun square Saturn) in?  Where do you feel obstacles are hindering (Sun square Saturn) your movement?  Are there areas of your life where you are reacting impulsively (Sun square Uranus) with knee jerk reactions?  Where do you feel worried, paranoid, obsessive, or uneasy (Sun oppose Pluto) in your life?   The areas of our lives that become highlight give us a hint about what changes we need to make in our lives to make them free of conflict and less stressful.

In Kabbalah, we are taught that what we see is only a small (very small) part of the big picture.   Often we are so afraid of change that we stay stuck in our current patterns much to our own dismay.   This week we are provided (via the stress of the aspects) an opportunity to see the bigger picture.  Often the scary change is for our better good, and often open doors and opportunities that would not be available to us.  The only condition is that we are brave enough to see.

Tarot Tune-Up:  Shuffle your favorite Tarot or Oracle deck.   Ask the following question, “Despite my current obstacles and frustrations, how can I best let my light shine?”   Pull 3-cards.  Let me know what you pulled!

You Wanna Learn Astrology?

You Wanna Learn Astrology?

Since I started writing the Cosmic Weather Forecast again (which I have written off and on for 4 years) several people have written and said, “I know a bit of basic astrology, but I wish I could read the planets like that!”  Let me relax your mind, astrology is not rocket science – it just takes a bit of study and acclimation to the symbols.  Yet, how difficult you may believe it is (and it’s not) you will find the journey worth it.   So, after carefully weighing my schedule (including converting Cosmic Weather Forecast to a weekly blog rather than a daily) and other obligations, I have decided to teach a basic astrology course for all those that are interested in exploring astrology.   Whether your interests are for fun, personal insight, or understand others in your life, you will find the inner workings of the cosmos an amazing experience.  To top it off – the class will be absolutely free!

What Is Astrology?

A man’s life is characteristic of himself – Carl Jung

So, what is Astrology?  We have all heard people say, “I wish ‘so and so’ came with a handbook!   I would understand them better.”  Well what if I told you that ‘so and so’ was born with a handbook!    This is exactly what Astrology is – a complete profile of your individuality, the roots that you were born from, what your potential talents are, and how to overcome innate weaknesses.   In essence, it is a blueprint of the (your) soul.  It reveals everything about you!  In addition, it can reveal everything about the people that are important or meaningful in your life.

How It Works?

I decided that I would put lessons up in blog form.  Why?   I want to teach small chunks of information that can be absorbed before moving on to the next lesson.  Blog form allows you to ask questions, and give clarification on material that you may not understand.  It will be like a real classroom experience.   In addition, you will be able to share your experience and understanding with others that are studying as well.   I feel that teaching this way will make the class more fluid, and will allow it to be an experience as well as an exploration.

With all the projects I have going, I am not going to put a set schedule on when the classes will be published, but I am going to attempt to do at least 2 lessons a month.   Some lessons will require more material than others, so they will take longer for me to put together.   You will be able to find the class updates by returning to my blog or I will update their release via social networking.

I cannot wait to work with all of you!

The Challenge of the Super Friends

Medusa's Head Courtesy of Warner Brothers

Wow!  What a weekend?  One of the things that I am the most amazed/amused by is how astrological aspects affect those of us (in this case MOI) that should know better.  I knew that Mercury squared Uranus on Saturday.  I also knew that Mercury would oppose Pluto on Sunday.  I knew just how tough the weekend would be, but that did not prevent me from falling head first into my OWN idiot tailspin.  At the time the ooze was leaking out of the sewer and permeating its way into my life, I did not even register the astrological aspects.   Could this mean that on some level we all need to experience (even those of us that are astrologers) the astrological aspects?  All planetary aspects have a lesson to teach us.

I needed to step back and relax.  So, what is the big picture?

Since the end of the TV Season (May Sweeps), I have noticed that more people are venturing online or increasing their online activities in search of entertainment.  Who can resist the unlimited flood of YouTube videos, a wallowing pool of useless (not mine, of course) online articles, social networks all of flutter with activity, or the stray peter tweeter?  It can be quite the fun time.  Of course moderation (which does not seem to exist right now) is a must!  However, I have noticed an undercurrent of online nastiness, and being the “dutiful” astrologer, I needed to get to the roots of the matter.  After all, nobody likes to battle the “Legion of Doom” — especially not a Superfriend!

Now, where is my astrological cape?

Courtesy of DC Comics

On June 16th, the day after the lunar eclipse in Sagittarius, Mars (the planet of aggression) moved to 26 Taurus.   This degree of Taurus is the home of the fixed star Caput Algol (also known as Medusa’s head), which is considered one of the most evil of all the fixed stars.    The interpretation by most horary and mundane astrologers is that Caput Algol literally can be translated to “off with your head.”  In modern times, it means we lose it!  We begin acting out and begin to feel a spirit of entitlement, or we become focused obsessively on one thing – our ego.  Since we are discussing the planet Mars and the sign of Taurus (the I have sign), we are “fighting” for what is “ours”.   Currently Mars is at 29 degrees of Taurus, which is the degree of another fixed star called “Alcyone”.   This fixed star is often known as the “Weeping Sisters,” and it gives us something to “cry about”, and is known for its rather morose qualities.   Generally, put the last few degrees of Taurus, are quite emotionally frustrating and especially with the aspects over the weekend (Mercury square Uranus, Mercury oppose Pluto) are harbingers of tension.

Moral of the Story:  Never leave your astro superhero cape at the cleaners!

On Monday, Mars will move out of Taurus and into the free spirited air sign of Gemini.   The expression of Mars will become more civilized, despite the fact that Mars (in the sign of the Twins) is rather erratic and hard to discipline.   During Mars transit through Gemini, we need energetic communication of ideals, and if not properly expressed feel tense and restless.    It is best to keep our minds fully engaged and inspired.   Further, all old uncompleted projects that we have lost interest in will fall to the side, as we become engaged in more stimulating activities that recapture our passion.   After all, every ending is the jump start on a new beginning!

Tarot Tune-Up: Shuffle your tarot deck and draw 3 cards.  Ask yourself the following question — How can I best recapture my passions?  Let me know what you pulled!

It’s True — I Am Crushing On a Girl

Yep.   You read that right!  I, the openly gay astrologer/tarotist/psychic/kabbalist am totally smitten with a girl.  How can this even be possible?

When I first came across her, I didn’t really care for her.  Oh, of course, she was cute and sassy (which is always a plus for any red blooded gay man), but a little too gynocentric for me.   However, like a fine wine she has become an acquired taste.

So, who is this mesmerizing lady?  I am not telling you yet!

On with the forecast…

This weekend starts off pretty well, but declines rather quickly.  To begin, we have Venus in Gemini trine Saturn in Libra.   Anytime, Saturn is in aspect to a planet it forces the planet to be rather sober and contained, which social Venus has great disdain for.    Venus loves pleasure, relationships, money, and luxury – being put on a budget and being restricted from being a social diva is not really an experience she prefers.    However, since the aspect is a trine she deals with it rather grudgingly.   Sometimes every girl (even Might Aphrodite) needs a break!  Venus and Saturn instruct us to play it safe this weekend with our friendships and relationships.  Contain emotional reactions, and avoid those that tend towards the dramatic.  In addition, if you do spend time socially confine it to deep friendships that are dependable and reliable.

Now the fun begins – not!  Mercury, the weather maker of the week comes back again with two prickly aspects.   The trickster planet will square Uranus and the on Sunday (Father’s Day) opposes Pluto beginning a rather nasty grand cross (Saturn joins the fun next week).   This is a messy combination, which can lead to stress, disagreements, adversarial communications and downright nastiness.  Mercury in square to Uranus is a highly reactive aspect that involves Mercury’s quicksilver tongue.   This can be especially messy, because of Uranus’ restless and impatient nature.   We could easily find ourselves in situations where our impatience may impede our good social graces.  Mercury opposition to Pluto, on the other hand, is rather tense and compulsive.   Oppositions via their own nature produce conflict, but since Mercury rules communications, arguments and stressful situations are bound to occur.   Mercury oppose Pluto tends to see “what is wrong” with everything, rather than “what is right,” which can easily lead us down the dangerous road of obsession.  This weekend there is a great need to practice strength and self-control to cope with our difficulties.

Now, back to the fun stuff – you still want to know about the lady I am crushing on?   Well, her name is Marie Forleo and she is the webmistress of http://www.marieforleo.com .    She has an amazing amount of content on her website (that is gynocentric), but I have come to find her rather refreshing, innovative, and to be frank – amazing!  The reason that I have saved my “secret crush” until today is that she has a recent video that can help with the difficult energy of the weekend.  It is called, “How to Immediately Stop Stressing Out.”   I love her slogan, “everything is figure-out-able.” With the tense energy of this weekend, this video contains great information to help us through reacting to circumstances around us.

Tarot Tune-Up:   Shuffle your tarot deck, and ask the tarot the following question.  How can I better deal with stress?  Pull three cards.  Let me know what you pull.

See you guys on Monday!

Ask Jacki and Storm: Candle Magic Tips

Ask Jacki and Storm,

I was wondering if you can help direct me to specific candles, oils, incense, etc @ Coventry Creations for my issue. I just got a new job after being unemployed for about 3 months. My husband & I are trying to save money for a place. We want to move into a good neighborhood so desperately. To top it off, we have family drama which is causing problems since we live with family at the time. What products do you recommend for my situation? I was thinking Blessed Herbals dreams come true, but not sure and is why I wanted expert advice from the experts

Oh also, I burned the Ace of Pentacles and Star candle the week I got my interviews and landed the job. Before that I burned a mix of Sun, VanVan, and others from CC.

I appreciate your help sooooo much,

Loyal Listener

——–

Let’s look at this in the whole picture – you are bettering your life and going for the next step in your personal evolution.

Using Storm Cestavani’s R.E.M. method here are a few candle choices:

“R” – Remove.  You need to remove the family drama – that does not always mean removing the people – just the drama.  Now if the people insist on keeping the drama, then they have to go too. Before you light any candle, you need to be willing to let the drama go yourselves.  Sometimes that family drama gives you a purpose and a boost to your ego.   Candles for this are; Witches Brew Eye of Newt, Tarot Tools Dispel Evil, Wicked Witch Mojo Tornado, and World Magic Kyphi

“E” – Energize.  What is it that needs to be energized and enhanced? – right now your self esteem and your confidence need that attention.  You have a new job and are looking to make a lot of changes that will take you out of our comfort zone.  When you are filled with Confidence and energy, you can accomplish anything.  Candles for this are; Blessed Herbal Stability candle, Tarot Magic Emperor candle, Tarot Magic High Priestess Candle, Witches Brew original candle, World Magic Brigit candle, and Affirmation Success candle.

“M” – Manifest.  You are manifesting a new home.  You understand that it will take time to save the money and are willing to commit to it.  What you need to manifest is the will, resolve and focus to make this happen.  Candles for this; Blessed Herbal Happy Home, Motor City Hoo Doo Road Opener, Tarot Magic Magician or Hanged Man, Wicked Witch Mojo Gimmie Gumption

Light the candles one by one and you go through this process.   This is something that is transforming you and the way you handle life.

When you light the Remove candle – ask yourself why you partake in the family drama.  Think about the family drama, your part in it and then as a memory.  If you need support in this – draw a tarot card as you ask yourself “Why”.  Let that candle burn out before you take the next step.

When you light the Energize candle, Look for actions that you take and the supportive comments around you that build your confidence.  Remind yourself every day how strong and amazing you are.  If you need support – Ask the question, “What strengths am I using today to better my life”  Then draw a tarot card if you need help answering that.  Let that candle burn out before you light another.

When you light the Manifest candle, start writing out the list of the perfect home for yourself and how much money you will be saving every week to get it.  If you get stuck, ask yourself, what am I doing today to manifest my dream – Draw a tarot card if you need a little support and help.

After all the candles have burnt down, continue the daily work you have been doing, asking yourself questions and staying committed to your goal. You only have to releat the REM process with candles   How deep you go in this transformation will determine how fast this change happens.

I hope this helps

Mercury Hangs Out With Daddy Jupiter and Uncle Neptune

The planetary weather player for Friday is once again quick witted Mercury.  As he continues to move through the emotional waters of Cancer he is going to trine mystical Neptune and then sextile beneficent Jupiter.  After the intensive energy of the Lunar Eclipse in Sagittarius that occurred earlier in the week, this combination of harmonious aspects is rather welcomed.

So, what is the planetary scoop?  Mercury in trine to Neptune is a great time to get in touch with our spiritual and creative sides.  You can use this energy constructively to study spiritual material, take some time out for yourself to reconnect to your soul, or just spend some time listening to music or watching a good movie.  Add to that one part of meditation and many of the problems of the world will just kind of become second nature.  It’s a great day to distress and decompress.

As we head into the evening hours, Mercury will form a pretty sextile to Jupiter.  Jupiter is the planet of expansion, so he will widen our interests and attempt to make us more social.   This is a great night to either spend romantically (especially with Neptune hanging around), or to hang out with some friends and socialize.   Communication is Mercury’s domain, so great discussions, a little wine, and maybe a slice or two of cheesecake will make for a great evening.

Friday’s Tarot Tune-Up:  Shuffle your tarot deck.  Ask the following questions:   What can I do to connect more to my inner spirit.  Pull a card.   Now shuffle the deck again.  Ask the next question: What can I let go of to change my inner spirit.   Let me know what cards you pick!

Mercury Moves Into Cancer

On Thursday, mercurial Mercury will move out of his own sign of Gemini and into the emotional waters of Cancer.   Whenever, Mercury is in the water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, or Pisces) our ability to perceive, feel, and connect to the instinctual world is heightened.  Mercury is like a child that has to test and experiment with everything, and the watery terrain of Cancer is no exception.  While Mercury is in the sign of the crab, we will notice that our understanding of life will not be through thoughts, physical sensations, or intuitive flashes, yet our experiences will be felt and understood through the lens of human emotions.   The sign of Cancer is associated with emotional security, so Mercury being in this sign for the next 3 weeks provides us a unique opportunity to find out what nourishes us, and how to implement “spiritual” food into our diets.

Tarot Tip: Shuffle your tarot deck and ask yourself,  “What sort of spiritual food would nourish me at this time?”   Spread out your deck and pull a card.   Let me know which one you picked!

It’s Not About The Weiner

Attempting to write about the general cosmic energy of an eclipse is challenging at best, but sometimes the media works perfectly in providing material that expresses the eclipse energy in a profound and universal way.   I am sure that everyone has heard about the scandal involving U.S. Congressman Anthony Weiner (D-NY).   The report of his ‘netsexting’ infidelities have appeared in every news outlet from the New York Times to CNN to TMZ – it is virtually (no pun intended) everywhere.  Over the next few weeks many stories will be written that have the tone and feeling of the eclipse.  The focus might be on what Weiner has done with his “wiener”, and whether or not he resigns from office.  However, despite the collective coloring, the eclipse beckons us to question the larger picture, and to realize that it’s not about the “wiener” it is about us.

Lunar Eclipse:  25 Sagittarius

So, what exactly is a lunar eclipse?   In astrological terms, a lunar eclipse is an opposition between the Sun and Moon.  In this case, the Sun is in the sign of Gemini and the Moon is in the sign of Sagittarius.   Since a lunar eclipse focus is on the Moon (a solar eclipse focus is on the Sun) we will find many of the same attributes that occur during an ordinary Full Moon – just highly amplified and focused on larger groups of people.   It is common during lunar eclipses for coup d’états to break out, earthquakes and other weather phenomena to occur, riots, epidemics such as flu outbreaks (especially if Neptune or the 4th and 6th house are involved), or any other spontaneous eruptions from the general population.   For example, the last lunar eclipse at 29 Gemini/Sagittarius and its involvement with laws, legislation, and legal matters spawned the labor strikes in Wisconsin, and the standoff between Governor Walker and his democratic opposition.

The current lunar eclipse also occurs across the Gemini/Sagittarius axis, however this time the Sun is in Gemini and the Moon is in Sagittarius.   The Sagittarian emphasis will bring out matters concerning the Judicial branch of government (i.e.. the Wisconsin Supreme court allowing the Wisconsin union law to take effect, and the motion to vacate Prop 8 decision denied), laws, legislatures and legislative officials (i.e. Weiner), foreign relations, and religion.  In addition, Sagittarius rules higher education and matters of philosophy.

It’s All About The Houses:

For our friends in the United Kingdom, this eclipse is conjoined to the Ascendant/Descendant (1st and 7th house) axis; this reflects a need for the UK to analyze its relationship to the outer world.  Moreover, possible problems with foreign relationships could arise.   This is a rather interesting hotspot that we should keep a very close eye on.  In the United States the eclipse lands across the 2nd and 8th houses.   On the surface this will highlight issues regarding finances, money, taxes, taxation, debt, credit, possible intense political battles which will result in a resolution (debt ceiling), and that little dirty word – sex!  Expect many of these issues to come to the forefront over the next several months, but pay very close attention to July 25, 2011, November 9, 2011, and December 12, 2011 as hotspot days.  Other countries that are highly sensitive to the eclipse are Afghanistan, Australia, France, and Israel.

The Deeper Meaning:

As I stated earlier, an eclipse that lands in the 2nd house has much to do with finances, a countries worth, and what we place value upon.   One of the most common keywords for the 2nd house is, “I have.”   We can make predictions based on these surface issues and experience a high level of accuracy, but what does this 2nd house really mean?  At the deepest level the 2nd house reflects our self worth and our value systems.  Howard Sasportas in his groundbreaking book, “The Twelve Houses,” has this to say about the second house.

“We base our whole existence on what we value.  When our values change, our whole life focus can alter dramatically.”

The Sagittarian lunar eclipse in the 2nd house has to do with a value system that is often larger than life.  Sagittarius is a “my way” or the “highway” type of sign, after all its ruler is Jupiter who had a zipper problem of his own) the King of the Gods.   The religious underpinnings that exist with Sagittarius are cropping up all over the place as changes are occurring to our current establishment – and such long existing laws such as “Defense of Marriage Act,” and “Roe V Wade,” have begun to resurface.   Further, we are more focused than ever on what people are doing with their sexual organs – whether it is Arnold Schwarzenegger, John Ensign, Tiger Woods, Jesse James, or the recently exposed Anthony Weiner.   In many ways, our countries evening dinner of religious idealism has created a rather sexophobic atmosphere,   which repudiates anything beyond the missionary position unless it is happening in their bedroom.   In America, sexophobia casts a very large shadow!

The lesson(s) of this eclipse straddling the 2nd and 8th house axis is not really about money, sex, out-dated archaic laws,  or worn-out religious morals that are the inheritances of a time long past, yet an invitation for us to explore our values.   What do we really value?    Further, how do our values add to the larger collective?  At the end of the day, what we truly value is what we have, and in many cases the only thing we have is ourselves.   It’s time we make the most of it!

Tarot Tune-Up:

Take all the court cards out of your tarot deck and shuffle them.   Ask the Tarot Court, what do I really value?  Pull a card from the deck.  Let me know what you pulled!

Do You Control Your Emotions or Do Your Emotions Control You?

One of the first ideas you learn in Kabbalah is to question everything.  This is an alien concept to most religious systems (and I include many metaphysical systems in this category as well), which tend to learn towards blind faith and complete adherence to a perceived “higher” authority.  Kabbalists take concepts out of the practical realm, and attempt to understand its meaning with broader strokes in order to then reapply the “gleamed” knowledge in a concrete and more applicable manner.  Astrologically, I attempt to do the same thing – understand the deeper meaning of an astrological aspect so we can apply it to our lives in a practical way.

Now let me introduce you to a new feature that will occur with the Cosmic Weather Forecast, which will allow us to incorporate these ideas, which will be called “Tarot Tune-Up”. This will allow you (the reader) to actively participate in the Cosmic Weather Forecast in order to understand how the energies directly apply to you and your circumstances.  Understanding our circumstances give us the power to make proactive meaningful changes in our lives, rather than being reactive to the energetic forces around us.  After all, the stars impel they do not compel.

On Monday, the Moon continues to move through emotional Scorpio.   The Scorpio Moon is intense, intuitive, and understands the deep emotional underpinnings of the motives and intentions of others.  However, despite the Scorpio Moon’s need for emotional closeness (which is a necessity for all water sign moons), the fear of being emotional dependent or vulnerable to others prevents true intimacy.    We could find ourselves today caught up in circumstances where we attempt to understand the intentions of those that are around us.  However, we need to understand that “behaviors” and “motivations” are often the result of much broader circumstances than what appears on the surface.

The last aspect that the Moon will make before turning void of course (1:43 PM EDT) will be an opposition to Mars.   Mars is the planet that allows us to go out into the world and get what we want out of life.  In essence, he is the warrior planet of the Sun.   However, when he gets entangled with the emotional Moon we tend to feel like we are on an emotional roller-coaster, and often we feel angry with our current circumstances.   Avoid getting entangled in situations where your emotions control you, rather than you controlling your emotions.  The Moon will remain void of course until late evening when it will move into Sagittarius.

Tarot Tune-Up:  Using the tarot (you can modify this for any system you may use) pull two cards ask the following questions.   How can I better control my emotions?  How do I prevent my emotions from controlling me?

Let me know what you pull!
