Blog Buddy with Patricia Shaw

I am thrilled to be a Blog Buddy on Day 6 of the Blog Tour of author Patricia Shaw whose book Healers Almanac, Journey into Health with Wisdom from the 21st Century Goddesses!  Launches on Amazon on Thursday January 5th 2012.  She will also appear on “Keep It Magic” on January 3.

Patty Shaw is an UCM minister, Reiki Master, Spiritual Counselor and teacher and has been interested in the way we heal for most of her life.  When she became a mother she took her own mom’s strategy for health care for the family and added to it by exploring many alternative healing modalities and medicine.  Over the last twenty years Patty has been helping others create happiness through creating health in our body, mind and spirit.  Patty is passionate about helping people whether it’s in her private practice, at her Reiki Clinic or at her School of Akashic Healing where she teaches others how to be spiritual healers.

Patty is also co-owner of Coventry Creations with her sister Jacki Smith. Coventry Creations is known for its candles incense and oils that inspire us to make magic the Coventry way.  No matter what’s getting in the way of your success, Coventry Creations has a candle for that.

Yesterday, Patty visited Barbara Joye at www.theshiftguru.com where they talked about writing and living her dream.

Here’s what Patty and I chatted about the other day when I got to ask her some questions about her personal opinions about when to use traditional vs. alternative healing.   I hope you enjoy it.

Storm: How long have you been in the healing industry?

Patty: Oh my gosh Storm, I’ve been at it for 21 years. Thanks for making me do the math. LOL. Is it gauche to LOL in a blog?  I took my first Healer Development classes 1990.  By 1994 I was a registered Healer Practitioner with the Universal Church of the Masters in California and have been a licensed minister with them ever since.  I continued my healing education by getting my Reiki Master/Teacher certificate and became a Transformational Yoga instructor in 1997.   Between the years of 1999 and 2007 I taught classes for intuition development while writing the Healers Almanac. After that I worked on my practice, co- wrote a program that teaches others how to work in the Akashic Records for healing and enlightenment.  It’s a great course and very comprehensive.  We just started our second year and look forward to creating an online course in the next year or two.

Working at Coventry Creations has also been a significant part of being in the healing industry.  I have worked closely with Jacki for the last nineteen years cultivating spiritual products that promote healing, empowerment and magic in an indirect yet very powerful way.  Each and every recipe we blended supports our customers drive to create their reality in the direction of personal success and finding meaning in their lives.  I have had the pleasure of helping many people pick out the exact right candle and make some “magic happen” by busting through their personal dogma and being more authentic. That’s shop talk for finding the strength to let go of what doesn’t work and start spending time and energy on what will.

Storm:  What made you decide to do healing work rather than a traditional career?

Patty: I did try the traditional career path for a while. I got a degree in Park Planning and Design at Michigan State University and worked as a Landscape Designer for 10 years before I totally changed my life.  I wasn’t dissatisfied with the work, but I found I’d rather delve into the inner workings of one’s psyche and help them unravel the mystery of themselves instead of telling the crew where to plant that tree.  I guess I could have gone into psychology, and I almost did at MSU, but I chickened out.  That should have clued me in that I was closer to my right path than when I was a landscape designer.  Alas, I wasn’t known for facing life head on.  Landscape design sounded safer to me.

Don’t get me wrong, doing the design thing for a while was not a mistake, it just wasn’t what I was passionate about.  I really wanted to help people and I wanted my approach to be from a spiritual and metaphysical perspective. Once I trained to be a spiritual healer and cranked open my psychic gifts I felt like I was getting somewhere.  I read a ton of books, practiced a lot and became almost anti traditional.  As we all know the pendulum needs to swing in order to create the momentum needed to find balance.  Ultimately it’s all about my ability to help my clients and I get lots of information from looking at their chakra’s, auras, and sphere’s on their tree of life.  It’s a very efficient way to heal. I still garden and find that to be an amazing metaphor for healing our life as well.  See! I am destined to be a philosopher and not a builder.

Storm: What does the word healing mean for you?

Patty: Healing means Returning to your true self.  I’m tempted to say that most of us walk around thinking we know ourselves and our life has some sort of meaning, but I can’t in good conscience.  Most of us are actually faking it because we got enough stuff to be comfortable and follow enough rules to stay in the good graces of family or society. Most of us are too scared to not be part of the program and that causes psychic amnesia.  When we heal, we are returning to the truth of ourselves, which includes all that hooey about being connected to a loving ever present universal intelligence. Well what can you do with that?  It’s to abstract for us. We’re trying to survive in this material world.   But, when we do remember and heal that disconnect, the material world becomes like child’s play and can be molded into what we need and want – without having to buy into the belief that if I have more you have less.  OR the belief that I’ve been bad so I must be denied something critical for my healing, like love, forgiveness and acceptance.  The truth will set you free and heal you Body Mind and Spirit but it’s a slippery one to hang on to.  If you approach healing as a process of coming home to your true self, you will be able to recognize all your illusions and just let them go.  Once you see your true self, you won’t want to be anyone else.

Storm:  Do you feel that there is a negative stigma on people who use alternative healing?

Patty: Yes I do and I think that is why practitioners and patients of alternative medicine and modalities stick together and support each other.  When I was preparing for my Get Healthy Stay Healthy seminar I invited some Doctor’s who practiced integrative medicine; Meaning that they subscribed to the idea that using natural means of healing can be a beneficial support to the rest of their medical practice.  I completely agree with that, but I was still put on the shelf.  Not one doctor wanted to join the conversation.  I was surprised.  I thought in the true spirit of creating a bridge between the two philosophies of healing, a meeting of the minds would be welcome.  This is one small isolated experience and I am by no means letting these few doctors speak for all doctors.  There are many who embrace alternative medicine in their practice and are very open and helpful. Until that bridge is built, there will be two camps to visit.

The other side of this coin is the lack of validation and coverage by the insurance companies. This sends a message that alternative medicine and therapies are ineffectual or at the least unproven.  General opinion among those who have not tried alternative therapies is that it’s a waste of money, doesn’t work or if it works results are to slow and it could even be dangerous. It’s possible that they have been influenced by conventional medicine and the insurance companies.  It’s really unfortunate, because alternative medicine is a great gift to humanity and is offered by brilliant and caring individuals.

Often our health care choices are made by what is covered by insurance.  This leaves most if not all costs for alternative therapies and medicines completely out of pocket. That severely limits many people ability to participate.  You may get some coverage for Chiropractic medicine and massage if it was prescribed by your doctor for physical therapy. Alternatives or options to your health care become a DIY situation.  My observation is that there are two kinds of people who use alternative medicine, those who need to live and heal in as natural state as possible and understand that we are energy and to ignore that is to miss out on the truth of how we heal. The other group is those who have a seriously debilitating condition and have not found any relief or cure from conventional medicine and are searching for an answer.

Storm:  When do you feel that someone should use alternative healing rather than traditional psychology?

Patty:  A spiritual healer helps you understand the goal of this life from the perspective of your soul’s evolution.  He or she will be able to help you see how the events in your life both good and bad support this.  If you desire to look deeper into the meaning of any aspect of your life and what lessons you are here to learn, and what gifts you are here to develop I recommend consulting with a spiritual healer or counselor.  They have studied mysticism, theology, and metaphysics. They have developed their intuitive abilities to the point where they can “see” or experience you in a very different light and give you that feedback.  With both psychology and spiritual healing you will be able to change your behavior, your “luck”, and neutralize many if not all your fears with their guidance, but with alternative healing you have the added benefit of learning your spiritual nature.   There is no greater balm to the soul as when it’s lower self is listening and doing what it can to align itself with the higher self.

5 Ways Britney Can Insure Her Marriage to Jason

Is the third time a charm?

The Princess of Pop, Britney Spears revealed on Friday morning that she is engaged to former manager Jason Trawick.  Spears revealed her 3.5 carat diamond ring at a 40th birthday party she held for Trawick at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas.

This is not the first time at the altar for the “Oops, I Did It Again!” singer.  In January 2004, Britney married childhood friend Jason Alexander in Las Vegas.  Her first marriage lasted a mere 55 hours.  In late 2004, Britney married backup dancer Kevin Federline who is the father of her 2 children – Sean and Jayden.  Spears divorced Federline in July 2007.

Since Britney has had such a difficult time in relationships we decided to ask the Tarot for advice to give Britney in order to assist her in her new marriage.

5 Ways Britney Can Insure Her Marriage to Jason:

Page of Pentacles:  Britney could use this Page to create a new beginning for herself.  The Page of Pentacles reflects the establishment of solid foundation, and as long as it is nourished it will continue to grow.   A pregnancy could soon be on the horizon.

King of Pentacles:   The Kings in the tarot are cards of mastery, and the King of Pentacles is the master of the physical world.   Associated with the sign of Capricorn, the King of Pentacles instructs Britney to have self-control, be responsible, and work hard at her marriage.  If Britney can manage to do this, her marriage to Jason can be long term and very satisfying for her.

Queen of Wands:  The Queen of Wands is one of the most popular cards in the tarot.  She represents a woman who is in control of her own domain, and in charge of her kingdom.   The Queen of Wands is deeply intuitive and reflects a woman who has visions of future potentials, and the ability to inspire those around her.  Britney can use this energy to continue to create magic in her marriage, and not allow it to become stale or overly mundane.

5 of Wands:   This card is traditionally associated with strife and conflict.  All relationships, no matter how stable they may be, will go through periods of conflict.   Britney was born with her Moon in Aquarius which can often dissociate when problems occur.   Possibly this has contributed to her past marital and relationship problems.  Britney must learn how to emotionally work through any marital struggles.   This could provide her with a more durable relationship than her natal Venus in Capricorn requires.

7 of Wands:  Competition occurs in any relationship.  Couples compete with each other, people outside the relationship, and often with their spouse’s career.   Britney is one of the most famous women in the world and she will have to balance the time she spends on her career and the time she focuses on her family.   Understanding the emotional needs of her husband and children will go a long way.

Britney good luck with your new marriage!

Psychic View of the X-Factor

This week the X-Factor begins its semi-finals with the final 4 contestants – Chris Rene, Marcus Canty, Melanie Amaro, and Josh Krajcik.   The first season of the talent show has had plenty of drama, but mainly pointed towards the judges and not the contestants.

In the last episode, 13-year old Rachel Crow was eliminated after Nicole Sherzinger forced a tie vote between Crow and Canty.  This led the competition to deadlock allowing the voters (rather than the judges) to decide the outcome of the elimination.   Of course, the voters eliminated Crow which led to Sherzinger receiving many death threats and being harassed by fans (of Crow) using social networks Facebook and Twitter.

Since the judges seem to be receiving most of the fan attention this season, I decided to ask the Tarot how the judges are currently feeling about this and X-Factor.

Simon Cowell:  5 of Wands Reversed

Although this card is usually known as strife when it appears upright in a reading, it means “inner conflict” when reversed.   Simon Cowell really hyped this show and before the show premiered he stated that he would be disappointed if it did not exceed the viewers of American Idol.   X-Factor premiered with a listener audience of 14 Million – much lower than American Idol – but still highly successful.   My feeling is that Simon will have to deal with how to position this show in Season 2 to bring in additional viewers.   This may resolve on its own if American Idol’s new season numbers are on the decline as well.

Paula Abdul:  Ace of Wands

After Paula’s last reality failure “Love to Dance,” the former songstress and judge of American Idol sees X-Factor as a new opportunity for her.  Although she still has words and conflict with Simon Cowell, it appears that she feels much more at ease with this show than she did the last season she was on American Idol.   If Paula is smart, she will use this as a platform to come back musically like Jennifer Lopez brilliantly did last season on Idol.

Nicole Sherzinger:  8 of Cups Reversed

Sherzinger was heavily lobbied by Cowell to join X-Factor, but it seems like there is enormous tension on the show between the two.   Normally the 8 of Cups would mean doing inner inventory and walking away from a situation – which would not bode well for Nicole Season 2, but the 8 of Cups reversed could mean that she is going to stick it out.

L.A. Reid:  6 of Cups

There is a strong machismo edge between Cowell and Reid.   I suppose both of them are power brokers in their own right, and probably feel enormous necessity to show which “disc” is bigger.  I pulled the 6 of Cups for LA Reid.   This card means nostalgia of the past, and I feel that L.A. Reid feels like he is going back to his roots as a talent scout.   He is definitely enjoying his role as mentor of the boys.

X-Factor the Show:  Ace of Pentacles

Although the show is not doing as well as the last season of American Idol, the show is still doing well ratings wise.  The Ace of Pentacles is one of the most positive cards in the tarot, and reflects that this is another financial success for Fox.  Expect X-Factor to remain around many seasons to come.

Will Rosie O’Donnel’s Marriage Last?

Talk Show queen Rosie O’Donnel announced that she will marry girlfriend Michelle Rounds during the Christmas holidays.  O’Donnel who currently hosts “The Rosie Show” on OWN, met Rounds earlier this year at a Starbucks before making their first public appearance in September.   The couple plan to live in a 2.5 million dollar town home that Rosie recently purchased in Chicago.

Rosie – an Aries has always been a firebrand and (as of late) known for her rather controversial political views.   Her last foray into daytime TV was as the moderator of the View which was mired in infighting and bickering amongst Rosie and co-star Elizabeth Hasselbeck.  Uranus is transiting Rosie’s natal Sun creating a rather high energy period for Rosie.  However, Rosie’s Venus (also in Aries) will be transited by Uranus in 2014.  This could lead to relationship problems for O’Donnel and Rounds if the relationship is not nourished and Rosie feels constrained.

What is the future of this relationship?

I asked the Tarot for some insight into this relationship.  I pulled Knight of Wands, 9 of Cups, and Page of Wands.

I found this trio rather interesting.   I must admit I have a bit of concern over this spread.   The two fire cards reflect the power of highly idealized romantic love.   I would have preferred to have seen a Pentacle to give this a little bit of ground to go the distance.   Unfortunately the 9 of Cups is often too idealistic with its vision of perfection, and Rosie could have difficulty maintaining romantic idealism long term.

If I was reading for Rosie, I would suggest that she really take a good look at her tendency to become frustrated when the world of responsibility and details becomes a player in the relationship.   If she can build a solid structure underneath this relationship (in her last one she tried by having 4 kids), then this could work out.  Otherwise, as I stated earlier, Uranus could be this couples undoing.

How Kris Humphries Can Move Beyond His Marriage To Kim Kardashian

On December 9, 2011, Kris Humphries appeared on Good Morning America and sources close to the 26 year old NBA star claim that he is livid over the interview.  He referred to Josh Elliot as “this guy” because the interview revolved more around his marriage to Kim Kardashian than his basketball career.

Humphries – an Aquarius with Venus and Mars in Aries may find that the intersection between the personal and the professional will continuously collide throughout 2012.   Uranus will activate both planets throughout the first part of the year forcing him in and out of the spotlight despite his desire to move forward.  Further, Kris could experience troubles in his social circle with Pluto moving through his 11th house of friends.   Expect more news about his marriage to surface around April 22 – April 28th as Jupiter squares his natal Sun.

What Can Kris Learn From His Marriage To Kim K.?

I pulled some tarot cards to give Kris some additional guidance.   The cards were pulled as follows:   Judgement, 3 of Cups, and 2 of Pentacles.

Judgement:  This is a major arcana card and reflects Kris taking responsibility for his actions.  Was the marriage real?  Was it a giant publicity stunt?  The focus of the public is judging this rather harshly, and Kris may need to realize that it will take some time for people to take his feelings and his emotions seriously.

3 of Cups:  I found this card rather interesting.  In tarot, it can mean either a celebration or the coming together of relationship.  It is one of the marriage cards in the tarot deck.   Kris can really delve into himself with this energy and figure out what “marriage” and “relationship” really mean to him.

2 of Pentacles:   This card reflects Kris needing to learn how to juggle different parts of his life.   Intertwining his personal life and professional life was probably not the best decision he has made.  This card gives him the ability to see that both are important, but if you are going to be in the public eye then you might need to put up some proper boundaries.

Kris Humphries Future:

I pulled a card for Kris’s future – the 7 of Cups.  This card reflects choices to be made.   Kris can decide that he likes the fame that was involved with being Mr. Kim Kardashian, yet sacrifice much of his private life.  He could also chose to focus on projects that really matter to him and push beyond this.   The 7 of Cups will guarantee that many opportunities will arise so he can chose one or the other.

Trick or Treat Divination

Trick or Treat Divination (Top 5 Creepiest Halloween Candy Remixed)

I just love Halloween! Out of all the holidays this one is especially meaningful to psychics because our connection to the “other” world is heightened. On Samhain, a veil is pierced that allows the spirits from the other side to whisper into our ears if you listen closely. Also, it is a time for spooks, ghouls, ghosts, goblins, and just good old fashioned “trick or treating”.

A Bit of History:

halloweenAlthough the tradition of guising and wearing seasonal costumes stretch back to the Middle Ages, the first appearance of “trick or treating” (warning of the homeowner/resident of a trick if a treat is not given) began in 1911 in Kingston, Ontario. Eventually the practice spread to other parts of Canada and ultimately made its first American appearance in Chicago in 1920. By the 1930’s, the practice of trick or treating became a widespread practice in the United States, and eventually permeated the media in 1939.

In the 21st century, Halloween and “Trick or Treating” remains popular, and each year more events occur to celebrate the magical Eve. Over the years, candy and other assorted edible goodies have been created specifically to cater to children who dress up in costumes and visit neighborhood doors to collect their loot. Inside bags across North America, assorted chocolates, lollypops, candy corn, and the occasional piece of fruit are enjoyed by many young and old. However, in certain cases “the trick” might be played on those individuals who are ‘souling’ (the medieval practice of the poor going door to door on Hallowmas receiving food in return for prayers for the dead) when they receive unusual treats.

The Fun Begins:

Ashton Kutcher (@aplusk) recently put a link up on his twitter page, which I found incredibly fun. The candy images that were used in a Houston blog were just freaky, creepy, and hysterically hilarious. I am reposting the images here with my “psychic” commentary.

(Disclaimer: These comments are for fun and are meant in the spirit of the Halloween holiday season, and not for applied use. Any events or circumstances that may occur in your life as a result of performing this Halloween reading are merely coincidental – or maybe you have pierced that veil yourself and have tapped into your own future.):

Trick or Treat Divination

Materials Needed: A bag of candy received on Halloween.
Instructions: Divide out all your candy and see what you have received. You might want to place them in separate categories so that you can make sure you do not miss any of the tricks from the spirits, which have special meanings.

Ask your bag of candy a question. Any question. Do you wish to know about your love life, career, or finances? Any questions that you would normally ask a psychic. Write your question down on a piece of paper.

No Noted Anomalies:

halloween candyIf you receive a bag of candy that has no anomalies, this means that the spirits are at peace with you. This year they plan to bless you with the abundance of certainty and prosperity. You will find your life to be very sweet and depending on the amount of candy in your bag – very rich! However, too much involvement in matters of the physical could lead to an upset stomach – especially if you over indulge in the chocolate tasting candies! On the divinatory level, receiving tons of chocolate means that lots of hot romantic activity will occur in your future, but if your bag is filled with more hard candy objects the next year will be focused on refining your personal matters such as business and career.

Spooky Nerds:

candy1If you receive a box or boxes of Spooky Nerds in your bag, then the spirits have provided you with a special blessing this year. Spooky Nerds are a powerful love symbol. You may find an interesting individual – possibly with taped glasses and a pocket protector in your future. If this person enters your life, take a second notice! Let me give you the progression. Nerdy guy leads to high SAT scores. High SAT Scores leads to MIT. MIT leads to Computer Programming Job. Computer Programming Job leads to being the CEO of a High End Software business like Microsoft. Never judge anything by its outer shell, on the inside you might have just found your gold mine. On a divinatory level, receiving a box of Spooky Nerds means that love — although in an unusual package – may enter into your life. If you are currently in a relationship, the message from the spirits is to dress your boyfriend/husband up in more nerdy ways – it just might rub off!

Gummy Body Parts Candy:

candy2If you receive a package of Gummy Body Parts in your bag, the spirits are giving you a direct warning. You should proceed with caution, as an unusual individual in your neighborhood is thinking about you. Depending on what body part you receive will reveal what he/she is thinking about. Although this may creep you out knowing that others are thinking about you, it might not be all that bad. It might be that he/she is admiring certain parts of your anatomy – brains, fingers, lips, limbs or teeth. On a divinatory level, Gummy Body Parts are a sign from the spirits for you to horde what you have. Keep everything close to you, because someone may be after it – especially if you receive the Hannibal Lector Gummy Body Parts edition! Now, how about some fava beans and a nice Chianti?

Zit Poppers:

candy3Oh Zits! Remember them? They were those awkward red things on your face when you were a teenager, usually the result of eating too much candy or greasy foods. In other words, creations from God so that teenagers could not enjoy life! If you think about it, they are natures abstinence program for many, so we should not view them as all bad. Receiving a package of Zit Poppers in your Halloween bag though is a very good thing! It reflects that new things are on the horizon for you. This could be either in love, career, or money. Since zits are a reflection of an early stage of life development before a situation comes into full adult form, you should embrace your zit poppers candy and cherish and nurture it further. On a divinatory level, Zit Poppers reflects the birth of something new, something coming to fruition in your life, and even the possibility of pregnancy. However, if you are under the age of 21, that will not come for at least 6 to 7 years or the spirits will be quite angry! Never tick a spirit off, remember Whoopi Goldberg from Ghosts? They might come to your house and sing songs all night – annoying the heck out of you.

Box of Boogers:

candy4I know this is completely revolting. If you get this candy immediately check under your tables, desks, and chairs – anywhere occupied by young kids – and see if any crusty objects exist. If you do find some objects then you are blessed for years to come. Boogers are great when you receive them. They represent changes and negative circumstances from your life fading. Although difficulties from the past may still be apparent if you receive this candy, the spirits will make sure that your problems fade and evaporate as long as you pick them one at a time. On the divinatory level, receiving a box of boogers means that your problems and situations are trapped in a box. If you take this box and immediately get rid of it, you will find your problems quickly evaporating from your life. However, if you choose to eat these boogers, then I can snot be responsible for any problems that may occur. You have been warned!

Scab A Roni:

candy5For some reason, when I was analyzing this package, dreams and visions of San Francisco — Oh, wait – that’s Rice A Roni! On the candy label, I noticed that there were 16 scabs that were available. 16 in many cultures, numerologically, and even in the Tarot reflect the tearing down of existing structures and something new is replaced. This could be ideas, belief systems that you have held onto, and even circumstances in your life that come in the form of disruption, yet give way to something good or better. In the Tarot, this is the Tower Card, and if you notice on the packaging it looks like 3 towers of scabby candy. On a divinatory level, when you receive Scab A Roni this means that circumstances that you have held onto well past their sell by date, will come crumbling down. You might even pick them off yourself, by looking at the areas of your life that you need to change. Remember, scabs are made of coagulated blood which is our most powerful life force. Once your scabs are torn off, new opportunities will come about that are much more beneficial to you.

Conclusion:

These are just the known creepy candy that I could find! I am sure that there are some unknown and some yet created or discovered. If you have others that you would like me to analyze and tell you what they mean psychically, just send me the images and I will be more than glad to find out what they mean and how to apply those candies into your life. All comments are appreciated.

Happy Halloween!

Astro Class #3 — Psychological Model of the Psyche

My purpose for teaching this class is to provide knowledge of the use of the astrological horoscope as a self-help tool or to begin to study astrology in order to use it professionally.   As I have stated, it is my opinion that the horoscope is the best self-help tool that we can use to make great and lasting change in our lives. Further, I believe that it is probably the most powerful psychological tool that a therapist can use – despite the (still) archaic belief that the horoscope is the past time of those who live in a fantasy world, yet those with a cynical understanding of astrology pour over their own psychological models and maps that are similar in structure.

In order to learn how to use astrology in a more reflective (as well as interpretive) capacity will require us to learn some new terms.  Since the type of psychology that I study is more Jungian in nature, I will be using Jungian terms and models throughout this class.   However, I would like to mention that the Jungian model is not the ONLY model.   There are many other areas of psychology, such as Freudian and Adlerian that have their own psychological models and own languages.   The Jungian model is simply a starting point to give you some understanding of how the psyche works and operates, yet I encourage the study of other psychological models and theories.

Now, I know this class will be rather dense, and you will probably have to read over it a few times, but it will help you immensely when we begin to get into the actual reading of a horoscope.

Model of the Psyche

The above map is Jung’s map of the psyche.   As you can see it is a triangle divided into 5 parts – all of which are part of the psyche of the individual.   The top two levels which are labeled ego and consciousness are the conscious part of the personality.  The middle level is the personal unconscious.  The final two levels of the triangle are the collective unconscious and the deepest part of the collective unconscious.   Although it is not shown on this rather primitive map, normally a circle would be drawn around the triangle, which would be called the body.  So, to break this down simply we can use the following formula to define the psyche.

Psyche = Body + Unconsciousness + Consciousness

What is Consciousness?

Consciousness is probably the easiest part of the psyche to define.  Simply put, it is everything that you know.  Consciousness provides us with the ability to interact with others, it includes our thinking, our ability to analyze and relate, and our ability to sense our environment.   In addition, the conscious contains a particular component which is called “the ego”.

What is the Ego?

Many religions and psychological theories define the ego in a rather pejorative way.  In fact, we get our word “egotistical” from this viewpoint.   Egotistical means ‘belief that one is always best and never wrong’.   The generalized viewpoint and pop culture belief is that the “ego” is some form of self-obsession, and is often a term used as a form of insult.  However, depth psychology defines the ego in a more sophisticated manner.

According to Jungian thought, the ego is the core of the individuality of the person.  It is absolutely needed, and without it we would not be conscious at all.  Further, we would have no way of measuring our experiences and understanding of life.

There are 5 ways that the ego regulates consciousness:

  1.  Stability of Personality – Stability of personality means that the personality remains stable over time.
  2. Stability of Identity – Stability of identity means who you are today, who you were yesterday, and the day before, and the person that you will be tomorrow is the same person.  This is where there is enormous difficulty with psychiatric disorders such as Dissociative Identity Disorder where the ego has fractured and created several different personas to deal with life.   With DID, the stability of identity is not stable, and the person you are today, may not actually be the person that you are tomorrow.
  3. Cognition – Cognition is your ability to process information, solve problems, and remember details and scenarios that occurred weeks, months, and years ago.
  4. Executive Functioning – Executive Functioning is our ability to deal with everyday demands of life.  You know that you have to eat, bathe, take care of your body, and get up to go to work, wash your clothes, and go through the day to day process of living.  In individuals who suffer from disorders such like Dementia suffer from loss of executive functioning.
  5. Reality Testing – Reality testing is the ability to expect and obey laws of physics.  For example, you know that if you continue to run water into a bathtub without shutting it off when the tub is full that it will eventually flood the bathroom or you know that if you put your hand in fire that you will get burned.  People that suffer from psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia have a severe inability to test reality.

What is the Unconscious?

According to Jung, the unconscious is all that is not conscious.  This part of the psyche is probably the most complex, and is what Jung spent the bulk of his psychological career studying.   In essence, the unconscious is all our memories, all the material within the psyche that is not available to the conscious mind, and all repressed material.

The unconscious is divided into two different groups – the personal unconscious and the collective unconscious.  In the map of the psyche above, you will notice that the bottom three groups reflect the unconscious.

The Personal Unconscious:

This is the part of the unconscious that belongs to us – which is why it is called personal.   It is the area of the unconscious that is the easiest for us to work with and that we can experience firsthand.  Within the personal unconscious are feeling toned associations that cluster around a common theme.  These are called complexes.

Complexes:

This is another word (notice in psychology a lot of them end up being derogatory) which often ends up being a form of insult.  We often hear people saying, “That person has a complex.”  I am sure that most of them would be shocked to know that we ALL have complexes.

There are many psychological complexes, and depending on our personality some of them are more pronounced and others are not really that active within the psyche.  A few that we all have feeling toned associations towards are the mother complex, the father complex, the money complex, the job complex, and the ego complex.

Let’s take the mother complex as an example.  All of us have a mother; we simply would not be alive without one.  Some of us were raised by our mothers, some of us were raised by other relatives, and others were adopted.   Every experience that we have had with our mothers regardless of whether those experiences were positive or negative is part of our mother complex.  The same thing occurs with every other complex.

The Dynamics of Complexes:

  1.  Clusters of feeling toned associations around a common theme
  2.  All complexes have experiences associated with them.  We all have experiences with mother, father, money, work and career, and our ego (and many many more).
  3. Complexes make us behave in ways that are not part of our usual everyday personality.  The complex temporarily takes over.  This is called ‘complexing out’, and it is where the Ego (see above) suffers from a reduced ability to operate appropriately.   For example, during your early life you lived poorly, and your family struggled with lack of opportunities and poor job conditions.  You grow up and you achieve some success.  An event occurs in your life, where you either lose your job, or some form of financial struggle occurs and you go back to the feelings of financial suffering in your childhood.   The anxiety you are feeling and the reactions to your situation may cause you to behave in ways that you normally wouldn’t.   This is complexing out.

Complexes are easy to see astrologically.   We will discuss this at great length when we get to aspects later in the course.

What is the Collective Unconscious?

In the map above, the bottom two layers are the collective unconscious.  This is the part of the unconscious that we never experience directly.  In the body of psychological theory, there are many questions about Jung’s theory on the collective unconscious.  Nevertheless, despite the controversy all psychoanalysts agree that there is some symbol producing capacity of the psyche.   These symbols are called archetypes.

A simple definition of archetype is the experiences that we all go through regardless of our race, sex, or nationality.  So, whether you are born in a metropolis or a farm in Kenya there are certain experiences that you will encounter simply because you are human.   For example, we all have a mother, we all have a father, we all are born, we all go through puberty, and we all go through adolescence, midlife crisis, and eventual death.   All of these shared human experiences are inherited (common to all humans) and instinctual.

Astrologically, we have a rather sophisticated map for understanding and interpreting archetypes.  The planets Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, and Eris represent the movements of this rather particular dimension of life.  Further, we all have a 12th house which shows our individual connection to the collective – it is where the bones (psychological bones) of our ancestors are buried.

|The Body:

In the map above, imagine that there is a circle that surrounds the entire triangle and this will be the body.  In analytical psychology there is no difference between the mind and the body.   This means that what we experience psychologically will be made manifest through our bodies.   This is called somatization.  (I highly recommend you to review the work of Louise L. Hay, who has spent an enormous amount of her career focused on the link between the body and the psyche.  I recommend checking out her book, “You Can Heal Your Life”.)

Somatization is another psychological idea that has caused substantial debate in psychological circles.  In essence, somatization is making something physical that is psychological.  For example, some people who have issues with depression can have weight issues as a result of the depression.   Once the depression is dealt with either through therapy or through medication, often the weight issue (either over or under) is resolved.

Another way that somatization is experienced is through direct trauma.   When a trauma is experienced, often a “complex” can begin to manifest around the experience.   Often, when we either see, hear, or experience “feelings” (called flashbacks) that resemble the trauma it can create a response within the body.   This is common in psychological disorders such as GAD (generalized anxiety disorder) or PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder).   When the issues are worked through – either by psychoanalysis or working with a tarotist or astrologer – the physical manifestation of the trauma can often be resolved.

Conclusion:

This material is rather dense, and I encourage you to go over it several times.  Feel free to post any questions that you may have.   Many may wonder what this has to do with astrology, and I strongly recommend everyone have at least a working knowledge of how individuals operate.  After all, we are dealing mostly with people that come to us for consultations, or we are dealing with ourselves.  Understanding the larger dynamics can provide us with a bit of relief and hope.  We understand that life does not work in a vacuum and that we can all work through our concerns and issues and experience the positive that life has to bring.

Coventry Magic Debut As a #1 Bestseller

Back in the day—I think it was the late ’80s, but I won’t admit it—I discovered alternate spirituality. Wicca was the first flavor of alternate spirituality I tasted, and I have to say that the elemental magic I discovered there opened my eyes to the power of magic.  – Introduction to Coventry Magic

Studying magic is simple! Despite what you may have heard, the system is really not that complex.   After many years of publishers actually embracing one of the oldest of the arcane sciences, there are literally hundreds of books that will teach you the essentials of how to build a spell – such as learning the nature of herbs, colors, timing, utensils, oils, and tinctures.   The modern age (and the power of the internet) has made it possible for EVERYONE to have the information that has eluded many for centuries.

Despite its accessibility, there is one thing that is missing in most of the books that tackle magical subjects – and that is how to get a spell to ACTUALLY work.   In many cases, there is a common belief that magic is like an episode of Bewitched and that all one needs to do is twitch their nose or state a poem in iambic pentameter and ones desires and wishes are granted.

Since I am a co-creator of a magical candle line, I am asked many questions about magic and spell crafting.  One of the most frequent questions is, “I tried out this spell on this website, and it did not work.   Why?”   There are many answers to this frequently asked question.   However, what I have come to find out is that (in most cases) the “transformational” intention of the spell is either wrongly used or the spell itself is the wrong spell for the “situation”.   Believe me; this can lead to hours and hours of frustration.

The good news is that THIS ALL CHANGED with “Coventry Magic”.   Jacki Smith spends page after page resolving your “potential spell mishaps” before you even get to them.   You learn how to create a spell, how to put the components together, and more importantly how to create your intentions to make the spell actually work.   All of this is wrapped up in a humorous and fun approach to magic that takes it out of its Halloween garb of the past, and redresses it as a hip, practical, and fun way that not only allows you to cast a spell, yet teaches you some of the most powerful secrets of the universe.

From the front cover to the back cover Jacki takes you on a magical journey, which has been crafted from her own experiences of 20+ years of being a magical practitioner.  Some of the topics that she masterfully covers are:

When to use magic

Accessing your inner witch

Hexing

Transformational magic

Understanding your sphere of influence

Elemental magic

Using Tarot with Magic – (a personal favorite)

Building a spell from the ground up

Making your magic work

A complete of Appendix covering topics such as stones, colors, tarot, magical days of the week, and much much more.

I am thoroughly captivated by this book.   “Coventry Magic” has replaced many of the dusty witchcraft books of days long gone with a completely modern take on the craft.   If there is only one book that you buy this year on witchcraft – this would be the one.

You can order Coventry Magic IMMEDIATELY on your Kindle or on October 15.

Sun in Virgo — Moon In Aries

The combination of the Sun in Virgo and Moon in Aries is interesting because the two signs really have nothing in common.  Virgo likes everything structured, orderly, and understated; whereas Aries is enthusiastic, assertive, and tempestuous.  So, on Tuesday, we may feel like we are emotionally on edge and anxious to move on to the next thing, yet Virgo requires us to be detail oriented and thorough.   Since the Moon and Mars are in mutual reception (fancy term for each other’s signs), we may need to take extra caution or later in the week we may have to redo things to Virgoan standards.

Astro-tidbit: Anytime two planets are in each other’s signs it is called a mutual reception.  Mutual receptions allow the planets to change places in the zodiac.   In this case, it would place the Moon at 27 Cancer and Mars will be located through the first several degrees of Aries since the Moon moves very quickly.

The Moon makes several aspects Tuesday including a conjunction with Uranus, a square to Pluto, and an inconjunct to Mercury.  These

are very frustrating aspects since they all indicate that emotionally we may feel like we are on a rollercoaster as the day progresses.   My biggest advice for the day is to try not to react (will be hard with Mars’ influence) and just think things out before performing any immediate action.   Make sure that whatever you choose is something you really want to do before moving forward.

In other astrological news, Venus will inconjunct Neptune late in the evening hours.   This aspect is rather undermining because Neptune can make Venus very insecure about our relationships.   If you find yourself questioning your relationships or worried about what your significant other thinks or feels about you try to ignore it at this time.  Venus will soon move into Libra – the sign it rules – and you will begin to feel a little more emotionally secure on Wednesday.

Mercury in Virgo and How It Affects You…

Great News!  For those that were overly frustrated (and according to my social media feed that was most of you) while Mercury spent a significant amount of the summer in dramatic Leo, you can breathe a sigh of relief.  Today, Mercury will move out of shadow as it moves into the sign of Virgo for the 2nd time this year.  Mercury will remain in Virgo until September 25.   Take advantage of the next 7 weeks because the next shadow period begins on November 5th, and Mercury will go retrograde on Thanksgiving Day in Sagittarius.

Mercury is most at home in the sign of Virgo because it not only rules the sign but is exalted in Virgo as well.  Mercury rules expression, communication, conversation, and the way we understand life.   The next three weeks will be about analyzing and observing our circumstances especially regarding our jobs and daily habits, and ultimately making changes in our day to day life.   Further, we will find a strong desire to be charitable and will have opportunities to be of service to those that need it.   For those that wish to start an exercise plan or wish to put forth effort in leading a healthier life, Mercury in Virgo is one of the best times to do it.

There are a couple of things that we need to avoid during this transit.  One is attempting to over-analyze a situation, which can lead us to being highly reactive and often we can get in a self-righteous and critical mind set.   The other is to avoid excessive worry and fear based thoughts.   When we allow fear and anxiety to rule this can ultimately lead to problems with the digestive and nervous systems.

How Mercury’s Transit through Virgo Will Affect Your Sign:
(Read for both your Sun and Ascendant signs)

Aries:  Out of all the signs of the zodiac, this transit could prove to be not only frustrating for you but could lead to dramatic changes in

your life.   Try not to over analyze situations and circumstances and read more into them than what is really there.  Try to stick to the facts, not to your emotions.   Further, you will need to avoid being emotionally reactive during this time.

Taurus:  Mercury is traveling through your solar 9th house, so you will find that learning new things and attempting to understand the larger world will be your mission for the next 3 weeks.   Spiritual thoughts and ideas will be highly important to you.  If you have considered taking a course or a seminar, Mercury in Virgo will provide you with the focus to achieve your goals.

Gemini:  Mercury is moving through your solar 10th house.   You will be inspired by lots of information about business, job, and career throughout September.  Try to stick to one or two projects because when you have too much on your plate you tend to become bored with everything and nothing tends to get done.

Cancer:  Communicating with friends and associates will be very important for you during this transit.   You may be presented with opportunities that would not be ordinarily available by networking and linking in with your social scene.   Avoid over thinking circumstances and situations which are beyond your control.

Leo:   Mercury will transit through your 12th house which will open the flood gates to your already creative nature.   The 12th house connects us to the larger collective unconscious and Mercury transiting through this house tells us to pay very close attention to your gut instincts and hunches.   If you are inspired by an idea definitely go with it.

Virgo:   Speaking your mind and communicating your needs will be important over the next 3 weeks.  This is your time to stay focused on you and what you desire out of life.  In addition, Mercury in your first house could prove to be very beneficial if you are starting a promotional campaign or any form of self-promotion.  The natural sign of the 1st house is Aries which will give you drive and determination to get what you want.

Libra:  Chances for financial improvement will occur this month if you take advantage of the opportunities that are available to you.  Rather than dismissing things or staying on the fence, you will need to be more aggressive and actually seize the moment.  This may be difficult for you, but the rewards (if you can raise your sword to the cause) will be many.

Scorpio:  Mercury in the third house will present you with a natural ability for you to communicate what you want.   Since Mercury is the natural ruler of this house, you will find your mind will be very adept and your ability to process information will be at an all-time high.  However avoid gossip at all costs because it could prove lethal if your “information” turns out to be wrong.

Sagittarius:  Problems surrounding your home life may occur while Mercury is retrograde in your 4th house which could prove to be frustrating.   This includes everything from mechanical breakdowns, to housing repairs, and even arguing with other family members.   This is a month where you should definitely pause before you react to anything as Mercury’s silver tongue could get you in trouble.

Capricorn:  Mercury transiting your solar 5th house will give you deep insight into yourself and your true desires.   If you are currently single you could find someone of interest around you, or even start a new romantic encounter.   This is a transit where luck is on your side, so if you want to take a risk now would be the time to do it.

Aquarius:  The Sixth house is considered the house of health, jobs, service to others, and day to day activities.  You will notice that one of these areas will be activated during this cycle.   If you are experiencing problems in your work or career this could prove to be a rather difficult 3 weeks for you, but the good news is that things will improve dramatically when we move into October.   An excellent way of relieving stress is working out or beginning an exercise program.

Pisces:  Relationships will be your focus over the next 3 weeks as Mercury transits through your 7th house.   Since the 7th house is the natural home of the sign of Libra, you may find communication to be a little stressed.   This is a great time for you to reflect and analyze what you truly want and need out of your relationships, and attempt to convey this to your partner.

Tarot Tune-Up:   Get out your tarot or oracle deck.  Shuffle the cards thoroughly.   Ask yourself the following question, “How best can I use the energy of the Mercury in Virgo transit in my life?”  Draw a single card from the deck.

I drew the Ace of Wands:   During the Mercury in Virgo transit, I should focus on new opportunities and new projects that are presented to me.  It’s a great time to start something new.
